(Menu board @ Cafe My House)
Everyone who has read this site or follows me on Twitter knows I like meat, I like meat a lot. I like meat on it's own, I like meat on top of meat and I like meat with vegetables. That doesn't mean that I eat meat for every meal or even everyday - I will often go vegetarian and on occasion have a carefully prepared vegan meal or sweet. When I saw Cafe My House post their lunch special, a Tempeh Cheeseburger with Vegan Miso Gravy, I thought it sounded interesting and very yummy. With Auntie Loo and Brad from B. Good's recommending it, I treked to the south end of Bank St. from my west end apartment in search of a great lunch.
(The tempeh cheeseburger w/ vegan miso gravy @ Cafe My House)
I'll admit when I parked my car in front of Le Roi bakery I did consider having a pastry lunch but I walked by and entered Cafe My House - a cafe which promotes the health benefits of eating vegetarian and vegan. The cafe was mostly empty except for a few customers who were paying for their meal. I placed my cheeseburger order and daydreamed about a pastry sandwich - Epic Meal Time style. I got as far as deciding that the "bread" needed to be mille feuilles before my order was ready. I was shown the burger before it was packaged and I was amazed at how beautiful it looked .. and delicious.
Suffering through a drive back to my apartment from Bank St was miserable - the burger smelled wonderful, I had already seen it so I knew it looked great. It sat on the passenger seat taunting me at every red light. When I finally got home I opened the packaged and picked up the tempeh burger and took a big bite - the first word that popped into my mind was decadent.' The tempeh, mushrooms, miso gravy .. perfect combination and it really surprised me. I devoured it and the accompanying salad and didn't feel gross or have the haunting grease coughs normally associated with a decadent burger.
I'm definitly going back to Cafe My House - not just because I picked up one of their customer loyalty cards which lets me get my 7th lunch for free - but because it's really great food. Whether you're vegetarian, vegan or are a meat lover like myself, you should try the tempeh cheeseburger and maybe one of their raw vegan shakes. It will probably surprise you.
