(So I splurged and bought an extra shaving of white truffle - worth it)
When I read that Chef Marc Lepine was opening Atelier for a special one week only white truffle risotto lunch I immediately phoned the boyfriend to try and arrange a cute lunch date. He refused! Can you believe that? Can you believe that anyone would refuse a white Alba truffle risotto made by the chefs at Atelier?
I KNOW.
So, I did what any other shy, introverted foodie does - I trolled twitter waiting for an opportunity to squeeze myself into a group. Thankfully, I was successful and became the fourth to a group of three.
On the day of, I arrived promptly and joined my other diners in the unusually well lit restaurant. We chatted about blogs and horntrips before scratching our heads and figuring out some difficult wine math. With our wine order in (a 3 oz glass of Rosehill Run Chardonnay and a 5 oz glass of a 2006 Cantina del Barolo Barbaresco served at the same time) we continued our discussion about beer in trunks and eating sushi off the body of a naked man (would you do it?).
When the risotto arrived, conversation stopped. The table was engulfed in the scent of truffle and we patiently waited for our server to shave the prized Alba truffe onto our plate. Each diner luncher received two shavings but additional slices could be bought for $10. I opted for luxury and asked for a third slice.
Every0ne was served, truffles shaved and the polite waiting was over. We dug into our risotto and all conversation stopped; proper sentences were replaced with 'Mmm's, smiles and content faces. And of course, I had the gall to ask the Chef for seconds via Twitter and he replied by sending out a second plate! Bliss!
(Winner eats all the chalk?)
When the dishes were cleared and the wine fished we were snapped from our truffle induced haze with a game of edible tic-tac-toe.
I hope Atelier opens for lunch again.
