This year I've managed to gather over 16 different bottles of pumpkin beer (and that's not including the ones I've sampled at brew pubs). To help taste all of the pumpkin beer and ultimately find my favourite so I don't have to repeat this next year, I recruited some beer loving friends to my small apartment and started pouring.
With the help of some cheese, meatballs, chocolate and pumpkin nanaimo bars we went through the following bottles:
Southern Tier - Pumking
Harpoon Brewery - UFO Pumpkin
Mill Street Brewery - Nightmare on Mill Street
Dogfish Head - Punkin Ale
Beau's All Natural Brewing Co. - Weiss O'Lantern
Great Lakes Brewery - Pumpkin Ale
Wolaver's Fine Organic Ale - Pumpkin Ale
Weyerbacher Brewing Company - Imperial Pumpkin Ale
Each of us had different ideas of which beer was best. Some preferred the spicy, gingersnap sweet UFO Pumpkin; in fact, most of the non-beer drinkers chose this as their favourite. Others preferred the nutty, spice cake smelling Pumking, claiming it tasted like liquid pumpkin pie. Myself, I found I loved the roasted pumpkin flavours of Punkin Ale; balanced with brown sugar and strong spices (predominantly nutmeg) it was easy to drink even though it has a dangerous 7% ABV.
One thing we all agreed on was that this was the perfect way to compare the large selection of pumpkin beers without getting bored with the style. So, which beer are we collecting next?
